Verstappen had been controlling the race from the front when disaster struck during a routine driver change. The four-time F1 drivers’ champion handed over to Dani Juncadella, who immediately encountered problems on just his second lap behind the wheel.
A drivetrain failure brought the Spaniard straight back to the pits, where the extent of the damage became clear. The Mercedes crew’s inspection revealed critical damage that would force the car out of contention.
The car is expected to make a brief ceremonial appearance on track during the final stages as a gesture to the fans who have supported Verstappen throughout the weekend, but it is out of the running for all intents and purposes.
With Verstappen’s effective retirement, the sister #80 Mercedes inherited the race lead under the guidance of Maro Engel.
