Aston Martin reveal unusual cause of Fernando Alonso retirement

Cody Rhodes in

Aston Martin has revealed that Fernando Alonso retired from the Canadian Grand Prix for an unusual reason.

The Silverstone-based team has endured a horrific grand prix weekend at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

Alonso crashed in sprint qualifying, whilst team-mate Lance Stroll was forced to start the one-third-distance race from the pit lane after a suspension issue with his AMR26 whilst lined up on the grid.

Incidents in grand prix qualifying saw Aston Martin fined €5,000 for an unsafe release for Alonso, and a further €7,500 for Stroll leaving the garage with his car in an unsafe position.

The team then took a strategic decision to start Stroll from the pit lane for the grand prix, changing PU components and the set-up of his car under parc fermé conditions.

A third of the way through the race, Aston Martin was then forced to retire the two-time F1 champion due to what the team described as “a problem with his seat”.
