Katherine Legge’s hopes of becoming the first woman to complete Double Duty are over following an early incident with Ryan Hunter-Reay in the Indy 500.
On Lap 18, 2014 winner Hunter-Reay spun coming out of Turn 2 and looked to have spun clear as Legge dived to the inside of the track to try to avoid the McLaren.
However, as Legge swerved to avoid Hunter-Reay, she lost control and hit the inside barriers herself, bringing out the cautions.
She will now head to Charlotte for NASCAR’s Coca-Cola 600 later tonight, with Tony Stewart in 2001 the only driver to ever complete all 1,100 miles of Double Duty.
Alex Palou is the de facto nder the caution period, having traded places with Alexander Rossi in the early stages, but is not in the lead as a posse of cars stayed out, including Rinus Veekay, and Romain Grosjean.
