Max Verstappen qualifies for Nurburgring 24 Hours pole battle

Max Verstappen produced a strong lap in Top Qualifying 2 to progress to the battle for pole position at the Nürburgring 24 Hours.

It has been a strong showing from Verstappen’s outfit, with team-mate Lucas Auer having gone fifth quickest in Top Qualifying 1 before Verstappen took over for TQ2.

Verstappen faced the task of needing to qualify in the top 12 to progress to the fight for pole, something which saw the sister Winward Racing Mercedes face a major setback.

Maro Engel was wide out of a corner and crashed into a barrier, resulting in broken suspension and a Code 60, as barrier repairs were required.

Thankfully, for Verstappen, he had already passed the section of circuit before the incident happened, allowing him to finish his lap.

Verstappen set a 8:14.4, with no better laps having been posted across the first runs due to Engel’s crash.

However, once the Code 60 was lifted with three minutes remaining, Nick Yelloly went fastest with Verstappen having slipped to sixth although safely through to the fight for pole.
