Dan Ticktum delivered a stunning lap in the final duel to secure pole position for the opening race of Formula E’s Monaco E-Prix double-header.
The Briton faced Nyck de Vries in the final, but defeated the Dutchman by 0.131s after setting a brilliant 1m 26.551.
Ticktum is a driver currently without a seat on the grid for next season, with his pole lap having done his hopes of remaining in Formula E no harm at all.
Behind Ticktum and de Vries is Maximilian Günther and Mitch Evans on the second row, while championship leader Pascal Wehrlein starts fifth.
Duels
Despite a slight brush with a wall at the Circuit de Monaco, Ticktum put together an excellent lap, one de Vries failed to beat.
The Cupra Kiro driver was quicker in the first and final sectors, while only just adrift of de Vries in the middle sector. It represents Ticktum’s second Formula E pole, but the first time he will actually line up from first.
To reach the final duel in Monaco, Ticktum first eliminated Wehrlein in the quarter finals, before edging past Günther in the semi finals.
As for de Vries, he navigated his way past Antonio Felix da Costa first, before a strong lap in the semi finals saw him defeat Mitch Evans.
In the other two quarter finals, Günther defeated Nico Müller and Evans beat Joel Eriksson.
Group stage
The group stage of qualifying started under beautifully sunny skies and rising temperatures, although it was not enjoyed by Zane Maloney and title contender Edoardo Mortara.
Maloney crashed in second practice, with his car not repaired in time for qualifying. As for Mortara, the Mahindra Racing driver suffered a mechanical issue which could not be fixed under parc fermé conditions.
On track in the first group, Pascal Wehrlein went quickest with a 1m 28.832s lap and was joined in the top four progressing to the duels by Maximilian Günther, Nico Müller and Dan Ticktum.
In the second group, Mitch Evans continued his fine form after winning in Berlin and topped the group ahead of Nyck de Vries, António Félix da Costa and Joel Eriksson. Reigning world champion Oliver Rowland was eliminated and will start from the sixth row.
