Max Verstappen greatest triumph rated as Nurburgring victory chase awaits

Cody Rhodes in

The majority of Formula 1 fans believe Max Verstappen’s potential debut victory at the Nurburgring 24 Hours would not represent the greatest achievement of his career, according to a ApexF1 poll.

The four-time world champion qualified his Mercedes-AMG GT3 in fourth position for Saturday’s gruelling endurance classic, raising questions about where such a result might rank among his considerable achievements.

While 31.9 per cent of respondents said a Nurburgring triumph would be his greatest accomplishment, a clear majority disagreed.

Among those voting, the overwhelming choice was Verstappen’s maiden 2021 championship, which garnered 36.2 per cent of the vote.

That landmark title, secured on the final lap of the season in Abu Dhabi, ended Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton’s turbo-hybrid era stranglehold and delivered the Netherlands its first F1 world champion.

The 2023 championship, during which Verstappen claimed a record 19 wins from 22 races, attracted 18.1 per cent support, while his most recent 2024 title, received 11 per cent. Just 2.8 per cent selected his dominant 2022 campaign.

While a victory at the Nurburgring would cement Verstappen’s status as a versatile, all-round racer, the numbers suggest fans view it as an impressive addition to his CV rather than a career-defining moment.

For most, nothing will surpass the drama and sporting significance of that maiden championship three years ago.
